Therapy For Back Pain

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Back pain can be caused by so many different things. Injuries that result from accidents can certainly cause back pain. There are illnesses that can produce back pain, and back pain can be caused by muscle strain.

Back pain is one of the most common of all pain complaints. It is also the most difficult to treat. Some doctors prescribe painkilling medications and muscle relaxants. Chiropractors don’t prescribe anything. They simple manipulate the back to relieve pain.

Physical therapists are trained to teach patients who suffer from back pain exercises and stretches that will help to relieve pain. Physical therapies for back pain most often include instructions for and help with stretches that are designed to strengthen back muscles.

Most people think that back pain is something that happens suddenly. But the fact is that back pain is most often caused by years of poor posture and lack of exercise. The stretches that physical therapists instruct their clients to use are designed to add strength and flexibility to muscles that haven’t been toned.

Physical therapists also use massage therapy in conjunction with stretching exercises. It is common knowledge that massaging sore and aching back muscles can help to stimulate blood flow to the muscles and that helps to relieve the pain.

Usually the best kind of therapy for back pain is the combination of stretching exercises to build muscle strength and massage therapy to relax sore and aching muscles. The two techniques complement and strengthen the effects of each other. The sooner that a patient with back pain can begin physical therapy after an accident or injury, the better the therapy will work for him. Muscles atrophy very quickly with lack of use, and when a patient is suffering pain, he is just naturally going to move the muscles as little as possible.

Treating Upper Back Pain

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Upper back pain can be just as painful as lower back pain — but you probably won’t get near as much sympathy. Unfairly, people generally associate lower back pain with physical work, while upper back pain is generally associated with poor posture or sweating over a hot desk all day.

Upper back pain can be caused by many things, and it is true that poor posture is one of them. Lack of exercise is another cause for upper back pain. Upper back pain can result from injury or other trauma to the area, as well. Overuse injuries associated with repetitive motion jobs often produce upper back pain.

The treatments that are considered the most beneficial to those who suffer from pain in the upper back (neck pain and shoulder pain are often present as well), are:

Exercises: Exercise that is both active and passive works the best for relieving upper back pain. Active exercise is done by the patient himself. He is the one who will be pulling on the weights and moving the muscles as he exercises. Passive exercise is the moving of the muscles by others — a physical therapist, for example. When passive exercise is used, the muscles are moved without the assistance of the patient himself. Each form of exercise provides a different result, and together they provide the most complete relief.

Chiropractic Manipulation: The medical community has long pooh-poohed the idea that manipulation can relieve pain, but they are finally seeing the medical proof that they required to accept it validity as a pain relief measure. This is a fact that chiropractic patients have known for many years. Relieving the stress on a particular muscle does relieve pain. Chiropractic adjustments can relieve upper back pain and do so almost instantly.

In the end, a combination of exercise and good posture will help to prevent upper back pain.

Successful Back Pain Remedies

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Reliable and successful back pain remedies are difficult to come by. As someone who has lived with scoliosis for the majority of her life, let me tell you that I know back pain. The most effective back pain remedies that I have found center around traditional cures. A hot bath does a lot for my back pain. The heat of the water relaxes tight muscles and soothes away some of the pain. A bubble bath also serves as a great distraction that gets my mind off of the pain I am experiencing.

You will probably have to go through a few pain relief medications before you find one that will help with back pain. It seems to me that so much of my back pain results from stress and is therefore very difficult to cure with pain relief medications. A good massage is one of the best back pain remedies and is definitely the most enjoyable. Massages help relieve tension in tight muscles and increase blood flow to the area which can help ease pain and discomfort.

I do not recommend that you pop your own back. If you want to enlist the help of a licensed chiropractor to help you manage your back pain, you have my blessing. You would be better off going this route than you would be trying to adjust your own back. Popping your back can hurt you so try to avoid this crude back pain remedy.

Regular exercise and stretching can help a great deal with back pain. Stretching keeps your body loose and limber and will keep you from getting so wound up. Exercising can help build up your back muscles which will keep your vertebrae in the right places. Most of the back pain caused by my scoliosis is due to misalignments. Working on building up my back muscles has helped a lot by lessening the chance that vertebrae will get out of place.

As with most health problems, successful back pain remedies do not revolve around quick fixes. If you suffer from chronic back pain as I do, you will have to accept that some level of this will be with you for the long haul. Do not let yourself get frustrated with the pain. If you can accept it on some level as I have, you may find that you become less and less perceptive of it or sensitive to it.
