Good Posture And Back Pain

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Your mother was right! Stand up straight and don’t slump. Not only will good posture made you look better, happier, more successful, and more confident, but it will also help to prevent a lot of pain — back pain.

Walking tall, sitting with your back straight, and standing with your shoulders squared and your back bone straight can simply prevent pain that doing the opposite will cause. Think of good posture as the ultimate vaccine to prevent back pain.

Not practicing good posture can cause so many problems. Poor posture adds stress and adds strain to the back bone. A lifetime of poor posture can cause problems that are a lot more serious that just back pain, too. Blood flow can be restricted by poor posture, and the basic structure of the spine can be altered. This can cause severe headaches and even cause adverse affects to internal organs.

There are many everyday activities that can cause poor posture. For example, young mothers will carry an infant on one hip. This causes the spine to curve and will eventually cause back pain. Cradling a telephone receiver between the ear and the shoulder is another example of an everyday activity that can contribute to poor posture and thus back pain.

The adults, who work in offices, sit in front of a computer screen all day, or those who make repetitive motions or stand all day, are the ones most likely to be affected by back pain that results from poor posture. There is a tendency to lean the head forward when working at a computer. It is natural but it needs to be noted and avoided.

This pushing the neck forward and out of alignment with the spine can cause upper back, neck, and shoulder pain. Practice good posture when you sit, stand, and walk to help prevent undue back pain.
